If you are about to publish a book, you will hear the word ISBN many times. This short guide explains what it is, why it matters, and what authors in India should know.
What is an ISBN?
ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. It is a unique number that identifies a specific edition and format of a book. Since 2007 it has 13 digits, usually beginning with 978 or 979. In India, ISBNs are issued by the Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency for ISBN, which works under the Ministry of Education, and publishers normally obtain them through that agency.
Why does your book need an ISBN?
- Listing: bookshops, libraries and online stores use the ISBN to list and order books.
- Discovery: readers and librarians can search for exactly your edition.
- Accuracy: it prevents confusion between editions, translations and formats.
- Sales tracking: sales and stock systems depend on it.
Do different editions need different ISBNs?
Yes. A new edition, a different language and a different format (paperback, hardbound, e-book) each need their own ISBN. A simple reprint without changes generally keeps the same ISBN.
Where is the ISBN printed?
On the back cover, usually above the barcode, and on the copyright page inside the book. The barcode itself is generated from the ISBN.
Who should apply for it?
The ISBN is assigned to the publisher of the book, so your publisher will usually arrange it. Authors should check that the ISBN shown on the cover and the copyright page match, and that the publisher name is correct.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Printing the book before the ISBN is confirmed.
- Using one ISBN for two different editions.
- Copying another book’s ISBN or barcode.
A correct ISBN is a small detail that makes a big difference to how easily your book is found and sold.
