One of the first decisions an author makes is the format of the book. Each option has strengths and limits.

Traditional print run

Many copies are printed at once. The cost per copy is lower, but you need storage and must invest in advance. This suits books with steady demand, such as textbooks for regular courses.

Print-on-demand

Copies are printed in small numbers as orders arrive. There is little upfront stock, and corrections or new editions are easier. The cost per copy is usually higher.

E-book

An e-book can be read on phones and tablets, costs nothing to ship and reaches readers anywhere. However, many students and institutions still prefer printed books, and diagrams or tables need careful formatting.

How to decide

  • Audience: do your readers prefer paper or screen?
  • Budget: how much can you invest upfront?
  • Content: books with many colour images or tables may suit print better.
  • Updates: if the field changes often, shorter runs or on-demand printing help.

Hardbound or paperback?

Hardbound copies suit libraries and reference books because they last longer. Paperbacks are cheaper and suit students.

Ask your publisher which formats they offer, what each costs and who handles distribution. Examples of titles in different formats appear in the books published by Gyanavi Publishers.
